DFEi offers 12 Level 6 courses. These courses provide students with an opportunity to gain a higher qualification and improve their chances of entering the workforce at a supervisory level. Some of the course below offer progression opportunities into the second year of many third year courses.

Our Animal Health Care / Advanced Animal Care Assistant course is perfect for those of you who always wanted to have your own pet store or grooming parlour. With subjects like Canine Obedience, Wild Animal Management and Large Animal Husbandry, it will also equip you to enter the workforce as an animal care assistant or to work with large animals in a farm or stable setting.

When you look at the growing number of independent and chain pet stores, grooming parlours and open farms, you can see that there are many employment opportunities for those with the right skills. This Level 6 course will also gain you advanced entry into the second year of the BSc in Wildlife Biology at the Institute of Technology Tralee, and the BSc in Veterinary Nursing at Letterkenny Institute of Technology.

The Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Computing and Electronic Technology and Advanced Certificate in Software Development are supported by FIT (Fast Track into IT) to give you the essential skills to find employment in the IT sector. Not only will you receive training in job interview techniques and CV preparation, but FIT will also arrange for you to visit companies with a view to possible internships.

Graduates of our Level 6 courses have found employment in network support, software development, electronic and computer engineering, software development, programming, website design and maintenance. If you wish to continue your studies at third level, these Level 6 courses with give you advanced entry into the second year of the BSc in Creative Media Technologies and the BSc in Creative Computing in IADT; or the BSc in Business Computing in Athlone Institute of Technology.

The Advanced Certificate in TV and Digital Film Production will give you the highly practical skills to go straight into employment or to advance to third level. You get the opportunity to use professional digital cameras, editing techniques and practice using Avid Media Composer software.

You will learn, among many other skills, Television and Video Studio Production, Scriptwriting for Film and Television Drama, Documentary Production, and Film and Digital Video Production.

This Level 6 course gives you advanced entry into the second year of the BA in Film and Television Production in IADT and the BA in TV and New Media Broadcasting in the Institute of Technology Tralee.

The Advanced Certificate in Journalism for the Digital Age encourages you to conduct yourself like a working journalist for print, digital and radio platforms. This means writing articles for print and online, with a view to publication; interviewing in a professional manner for print and radio; researching meticulously, editing and sub-editing rigorously, meeting deadlines, being balanced and fair, behaving ethically, and working within the law.

On completion of the Level 6 course you are equipped to get started as a freelance journalist. You also have the option of advanced entry into year two of the BA in Journalism in DIT and the BA in Journalism and Visual Media in Griffith College Dublin.

The Advanced Certificate in Digital Radio Production equips you to work in this dynamic field of modern media production. This course is run by radio professionals, and it uses the latest digital resources. You will learn how to produce music shows, news bulletins, studio and location recordings, and podcasts.

More importantly, you will become part of a team that runs The Wave, DFEi’s radio station. Graduates from this Level 6 course have found employment as producers, presenters and sound operators at radio stations in Ireland and abroad.

Successful completion of this course will also gain you advanced entry into the second year of the BA in TV, Radio and News Media Broadcasting in the Institute of Technology Tralee.

The Level 6 Higher National Diploma in Music Production is a two year course that takes you further along the academic path but is still vocational and practical if you want to directly enter employment in the media, entertainment or music industries. Over the two years you will learn a wide range of skills in Sound Engineering, Music Production and all aspects of running a music business. You will learn from professionals using DFEi’s dedicated music production facilities, including a purpose-built, industry standard recording studio.

After successfully completing this two year course you can gain entry into the one year top up honours degree    the BSc in Creative Industries Popular Music Technology in the University of South Wales.

You can also avail of advanced entry links into second or third year degree programmes in the UK. These include the BA in Creative Music Technologies and the BSc in Music Technology at the University of South Wales.

The Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Architectural Technology and Design in DFEI will enable you to develop a portfolio of valuable skills in Architectural Drawing, CAD2D and 3D, Model Making and Design in preparation for employment or further study. Employment opportunities exist in surveying, construction and 3D design in architectural, engineering and design sectors.

This Level 6 course gives you advanced entry into the BSc in Building Surveying in Dundalk Institute of Technology.

DFEI has a long history in the fine art and craft of working with wood. The Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Furniture Design and Making allows you to develop your skills to create more complex designs, learning more advanced techniques and gaining competence using modern technologies.

Opportunities for direct employment include interior design, product design, management and sales in the furniture industry, or self-employment.

If you want to progress to third level, this Level 6 course gives you advanced entry into the second year of the BTech in Timber Product Technology in DIT, the BSc in Furniture Design and Manufacture and the BSc in Furniture and Wood Technology in the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology.

The Advanced Certificate in Administration prepares you to work at a more supervisory level in, for example, secretarial, frontline management and reception roles in public service, education, legal, medical, tourism, and financial services. You will study Administration Practice, Customer Service and Supervisory Management specifically to prepare you for these responsible positions.

This Level 6 course also gives you advanced entry into the second year of the Bachelor of Business Studies in the Institute of Technology Tralee. Crime prevention is a growing industry in Ireland, and employers actively seek DFEi students for Employment in this sector.

The Advanced Certificate in Security Operations and Management should be of particular interest to those of you who are attracted to a career with An Garda Síochánna, the Airport Police, the Defence Forces, the Fire Service, or the Prison Service. The mix of supervisory and entrepreneurial subjects, as well as Crime Prevention and Conflict Management offered on this Level 6 course, will also prepare you to work in a supervisory security role in retail and other private sectors, or to start your own business in security.

New and exciting areas of study in this area include IT security and financial crime. So, having completed this Level 6 course you might decide to progress to the BA in Criminal Justice Studies or the BSc in Computer Forensics and Security at Waterford Institute of Technology.

The Advanced Certificate in Health Services Supervisory Management Skills prepares you to work in a supervisory role in a range of health services settings. Not only will this course offer you enhanced employment opportunities, it is also a progression path to third level courses in related areas.

These include degree courses in Social Care Practice, Early Childhood Care and Education, Applied Social Studies and Social Science in Athlone, Carlow and Tallaght Institutes of Technology.
