World Book Day 2024 – LÁ DOMHANDA NA LEABHAR ÉIRE

world book day 2024

World Book Day is back for its 25th year of promoting books and the love of reading to all.

What’s it all about?

World Book Day is a registered charity aiming to give every child a book of their own. It was started by UNESCO in 1995 to celebrate books and authors and to encourage young people to enjoy reading for pleasure. World Book Day is celebrated in over 100 countries around the world.

What happens on World Book Day?

On World Book Day children are encouraged to dress up as their favourite character from a book they enjoy. Money is raised and donated to charities who buy books for children who are unable to afford them.

Howeve,r it’s not just schools who celebrate World Book Day. There are also many book-related events and activities taking place today in libraries and bookshops throughout the country.

Dressing up is obviously a fun part of the day, however the main aim is to encourage a love of reading and regular reading means increased vocabulary and concentration.

€1.50 book tokens are being distributed throughout schools in Ireland and children will be able to redeem their tokens in bookshops and supermarkets throughout the country. There are two Irish-published World Book Day books available in Ireland only. One in the Irish language and one in English.
