New electrical overhead lines technician apprenticeship at Laois Offaly ETB

Laois and Offaly Education and Training Board were recently successful in gaining approval from the National Apprenticeship Alliance to develop a new Electrical Overhead Lines Technician Apprenticeship, the first of its kind in Ireland.

The proposed apprenticeship programme was showcased for the first time at WorldSkills Ireland 2025 in Dublin’s RDS in September. The event is aimed at second-level students who are exploring opportunities to develop skills in the areas of apprenticeships and training when they finish school.

The new apprenticeship programme was very well received, as students got the opportunity to see overhead lines in action in the outdoor exhibition area, as well as getting to speak to potential employers of apprentices for this programme inside in the main arena.

Two Year Level 5 programme

With Laois and Offaly Education and Training Board as Coordinating Provider, the proposed apprenticeship will be a two-year QQI Level 5 programme, and will support the development of a highly skilled workforce in the electrical overhead line sector and provide a structured pathway into the industry.

The apprenticeship is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and expertise required to construct and maintain ESB Networks critical overhead electrical infrastructure. The programme will incorporate a mix of classroom-based education and practical skills training delivered by LOETB at the National Construction Training Campus in Mount Lucas, and on-the-job training and work experience through ESB Networks’ overhead lines programme delivery partners.

Recruitment for the first intake of apprentices will begin in 2026, with the inaugural programme commencing by Q4 2026.

Apprentices will spend approximately 25 weeks of the two-year apprenticeship at Mount Lucas for their off-the-job training, where they will gain top-class training and tuition to prepare them for a career in the electrical overhead lines sector.

Large portfolio of work

Donagh Shanahan, Chairperson of the Consortium Steering Group said: “As the chairperson of the group of overhead lines contractors, we are delighted to be working with LOETB in the development of an Electrical Overhead Lines Technician Apprenticeship which will support the large portfolio of work programmes required to meet ESB Networks’ future requirements. This is an exciting time for our industry, and apprenticeships are crucial for developing local talent to help meet future workforce demands.”

LOETB’s Chief Executive, Joe Cunningham said: “LOETB is proud to have the opportunity, supported by ESB Networks, to develop Ireland’s first apprenticeship for Overhead Line Technicians, a vital step in preparing a skilled workforce for the future of our energy infrastructure.

“This project reflects our commitment to innovation in education and training, ensuring learners gain industry-relevant skills that support both local employment and national sustainability goals.”

Essential expertise

Nicholas Tarrant, Managing Director, ESB Networks, said: “Apprenticeships provide valuable hands–on experience and equip participants with the skills and knowledge to excel in an evolving energy sector.

“This apprenticeship is an investment in Ireland’s energy future. It will help strengthen the national skills base for overhead lines work, ensuring essential expertise is retained by ESB Networks’ contract partners, while offering rewarding career opportunities for new entrants.”
