A new nationwide study conducted by iReach Insights on behalf of Ecclesiastical Ireland, proudly part of the Benefact Group, reveals overwhelming public support for strengthening heritage education in Irish schools.
With 1,000 respondents across a variety of regions and demographics, the research highlights a deep-rooted desire to reconnect younger generations with Ireland’s rich cultural legacy.
Key Findings:
• 94% of adults believe it is important for schoolchildren to learn about Ireland’s history, language, and cultural heritage.
• 95% agree that heritage education fosters a stronger sense of national identity.
• 88% feel personally connected to Irish heritage, with nearly half expressing a very strong connection.
Formative experiences
The study underscores the value of experiential learning. Two-thirds of adults recall school trips to museums or historical sites, while over half participated in Irish music, dance, or storytelling. These formative experiences are seen as vital in shaping cultural awareness.
However, concern is growing over a generational disconnect. 76% of respondents believe children today feel less connected to Irish culture than previous generations. To address this, the public supports a range of initiatives:
• 48% advocate for more frequent heritage-focused school trips.
• 43% favour immersive experiences like storytelling and re-enactments.
• 35% support Irish language immersion through Gaeltacht camps or themed school days.
Support for more support
Importantly, 79% of adults support increased funding for schools to organise heritage-related activities. Among aspirational ideas, a state-funded “Heritage Passport” – providing free access to museums and cultural sites – was the most popular, backed by 46% of respondents.
With increased funding and support, schemes such as this can be a great opportunity for heritage and culture studies to become more engrained into school curriculum.
Looking ahead, 54% believe future generations will engage with heritage through a blend of technology and traditional experiences. While social media is seen as a tool to keep traditions relevant, the role of schools remains central.
