The Department of Maritime Studies at the National Maritime College of Ireland (NMCI), a constituent College of Munster Technological University, continues to prepare the next generation of maritime professionals for careers that are global, dynamic and critically important to international trade, energy and sustainability.

Over the past year, NMCI, which is home to Ireland’s Maritime Simulation Centre, has further strengthened this learning environment through an €11 million investment in simulation and training technology from the Department of Further and Higher Education Research Innovation, and Science and the Department of Defence.
New simulation facilities
This major upgrade includes advanced marine bridge simulators, engine room simulators and rescue boat simulators, ensuring students have access to some of the most modern maritime training facilities in Europe.
These new simulation facilities support a blended learning approach, allowing students to experience realistic operational scenarios long before they begin their sea phase training with shipping companies around the world.
Students can familiarise themselves with ship handling, navigation systems, engine operations, emergency procedures and decision making in a safe but highly immersive environment. By the time they step on board a vessel for their cadetship, they already possess practical insight into the realities of life and work at sea.
The maritime sector continues to evolve rapidly, particularly with the growth of offshore renewable energy (ORE), digitalisation and sustainable shipping technologies.
