THE Traveller Apprenticeship Incentivisation Programme (TAIP) was established in 2023 as a pilot programme to support Travellers to access and retain apprenticeships.
An evaluation between April 2023 and July 2024 involved 46 Travellers and 45 representatives of Traveller organisations, employers and statutory bodies.
- Key findings include that many apprenticeships reflect traditional Traveller activities, making them a natural fit for Travellers;
- The TAIP has generated strong interest in apprenticeships among Travellers;
- Applicants found the bursary process straightforward, with the one-to-one support received from the TAIP highly praised.
- Over 90% of those who completed an expression of interest met the education requirements for apprenticeships, and 32% had Leaving Certificate or higher.
- Fears of discrimination, a lack of confidence in approaching potential employers, and limited connections with employers were identified as barriers to apprenticeships.
- The TAIP team is focusing on barriers to participation for Traveller women.
- 70% of those who did not secure an apprenticeship still wish to pursue one.
- The TAIP actively engages with employers to explore apprenticeship opportunities.
